with the glimpse of your eyelashes, Los Ángeles
With the Glimpse of Your Eyelashes is a series of personal drawings, paintings and sculptures. The pieces are largely phantasmagoric – a chunky string of cartoon animals, blocky Japanese words and finely rendered figures populate the white-backed drawings. Their sparing but sharp pigmentation shares a palette with Lei Min Way: solid yellows, blues, and reds hop around the space and remind one of their first day of elementary school. Lego blocks are strewn throughout the display, some come alive with faces painted upon them by the Artist. Echoing the Legos, the larger pieces are built up of smaller panels. The pieces explore the elemental nature of memory and self, bringing together shards of images culled from pop media, city life, and the digital world. In particular, Sustaita reconciles a split identification with her time spent living in Mexico and her time spent working in Japan. While the individual pieces are built up of readymades collected from simpler times, they are often poisoned by darker undertones. Children and inner-children are welcomed to come in and play in Sustaita’s delirious dreamland.
